The med spa industry has grown enormously over the past decade, and with that growth has come a wide range in the quality and safety of the care being provided. Knowing how to verify that your provider is properly qualified can protect you from complications that range from unsatisfactory results to serious medical harm.
Why credentials matter
Every injectable treatment, laser procedure, and body contouring session is a medical procedure. Botox is a neurotoxin. Dermal fillers are implanted medical devices. Lasers can burn skin. These treatments are safe when performed by properly trained providers, but they carry real risks when they are not.
The regulations governing who can perform these procedures vary significantly by state. This means the responsibility for verifying your provider qualifications falls largely on you.
What to verify before your appointment
First, check the medical director. Every legitimate med spa operates under a licensed physician who serves as medical director. Ask who this person is and verify their medical license. A med spa that cannot or will not identify their medical director should be avoided.
Next, verify the credentials of the person performing your treatment. Ask their license type and verify it is active and in good standing through your state licensing board online database.
For physicians, verify board certification through the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) at certificationmatters.org. Board certification means the physician completed an accredited residency and passed rigorous examinations.
Red flags to watch for
Groupon deals for injectable treatments should be approached with caution. The aggressive discounting model sometimes correlates with high-volume, low-supervision environments. Injection parties raise concerns about sterile technique and individualized assessment. Providers who are unwilling to discuss their training or who pressure you into additional treatments are showing patterns that merit caution.
Any provider who does not take a medical history before performing injectable or laser treatments is not following appropriate medical protocols.
Questions to ask your provider
Before booking, ask: Who is the medical director? Who will perform my treatment and what is their training? How many of these procedures do they perform monthly? What specific products will be used? What is the complication protocol?
A reputable practice will answer these questions readily. Evasiveness is itself a red flag.
Trust your instincts
A clean, professional environment matters. A staff that treats you with respect matters. If something feels off during your consultation, trust that instinct. There are plenty of excellent providers available. You deserve one who makes you feel confident and safe.
